Pressure Mounts As Top Politicians Repudiate Bloomberg Over Racist Stop-and-Frisk Policing

The policy is a clear violation of the fourth and fourteenth amendment rights of the individuals who are arbitrarily stopped and searched, say New York’s top elected officials.

Pressure is intensifying on Mayor Michael Bloomberg over the New York Police Department’s (NYPD) discriminatory Stop-and-Frisk policing whereby officers randomly and arbitrarily search mostly Black and Latino youth.

Critics have compared the policing to Apartheid South Africa’s old pass-books law whereby police there stopped and searched Black men for any reason.

Thursday a group of top New York City and State lawmakers traveled to Washington, DC to demand that the U.S. Department of Justice investigate the NYPD’s Stop-and-Frisk policing. The policy is a clear violation of the fourth and fourteenth amendment rights of the individuals who are arbitrarily stopped and searched, say New York’s top elected officials.

“What is going on in New York City only points to the many instances of racial profiling across the nation,” Rep. Yvette Clark, told NY1 News.

Assemblyman Karim Camara added, to NY1 News: “No one cares about stopping crime more than we do because we live in these neighborhoods. I’m raising two kids. You think I like hearing gunshots when my kids are sleeping in the other room? But you’re not stopping the gunshots, you’re not getting the guns off the street.”

Thousands of New Yorkers will gather on Father’s Day, June 17th, 2012 for the “End Stop-And-Frisk Silent March Against Racial Profiling.”

Amongst those calling for the march are National Action Network’s Rev. Al Sharpton.
