Rep. Charles Rangel (D-Harlem) the powerful chief of the House Ways And Means Committee decried the nation’s “failing” public schools system even as the new proposed Immigration Bill favors immigration for educated foreigners into the U.S.
“The whole idea that the Senate is considering an immigration Bill where education gets to determine who gets to come should be a concern,” Rangel said today.
“We are now importing engineers and scientists from India and China,” Rangel added. “We are close to a concept in this country where the poor folks don’t matter as long as we can get educated Mexicans here to work.” At the same time, the “public school system is failing,” Harlem’s leading politician said. With fewer opportunities and failing schools, African American children face a bleak future, Rangel said.
The Congressman was speaking at a ceremony to promote a June 25, 2007 Gala reception for Harlem Dowling – West Side Center, which celebrates its 170th anniversary.
Rangel noted that when he was growing up, Black families always opened their doors to take care of children without parents. “There was no need to show papers,” he said, referring about today’s complex adoption procedures. He said “kids need love but they also need education.”
