Rove Must Be Stopped

Karl Rove learned his chicanery from the best. As a 21-year-old he worked for Richard Nixon’s master dirty trickster Donald Segretti. Segretti—charged as a Watergate conspirator—was know for his penchant of planting false stories against candidates like: Senator Ed Muskie, George McGovern and Brooklyn’s Shirley Chisholm. Rove has proven he learned those lessons well.

It all started when this cabal, spearheaded by Karl Rove, stole the election from the American people. It has been all downhill since then. They lied us into a war, engaged in torture, illegally spied on Americans, revealed the identity of Valerie Plame as political punishment against her husband Joseph Wilson and currently we are embroiled in Purgegate.  This latest outrage is showing that “Bush’s Brain, with the help of Administration lackey; Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, orchestrated a political purge of eight U.S. Attorneys. As this scandal emerged Gonzales claimed that he didn’t know much about the specifics of the firings. The finger was quickly pointed at his aide, Kyle Sampson, who was immediately thrown under the bus.  But Gonzales, like his cronies is a liar. Remember, this is the same man who enacted the torture memo and called the Geneva Conventions “quaint. This Administration claims that it has nothing to hide, so why are they refusing to allow officials like Rove to testify under oath? Taking a cue from the Administration, Monica Goodling—a senior counsel and White House liaison to the Attorney General—has refused to testify citing her Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination.

However, Kyle Sampson testified under oath before a congressional committee contradicting Gonzales’ mendacious tale of being out of the loop. Sampson said Gonzales was involved in the firings, citing five meetings. Gonzales said the only thing he knew of the firings was that they were “performance related. Yet, it is now becoming increasingly clear that the firings were retaliation for a failed November Surprise smear campaign meant to tie up Democrats in political scandals as the election loomed. The idea was to use prosecutors to embroil Democrats running for re-election in investigations or prosecutions to offset the scandals surrounding Tom Delay, Jack Abramoff and congressional pedophile Mark Foley, making the outcome favorable for Republicans. But the plan backfired and many Republicans were roundly denounced and bounced from office. This “purge is political payback against these attorneys that Rove and crew blame for those losses.  Karl Rove is clearly the architect of the dirty deeds of this presidency. During Scooter Libby’s trial strong evidence pointed to not only Dick Cheney—but also Rove—as being the masterminds of this outing.

Mrs. Plame Wilson is suing Administration members. During the Watergate years, Rove became adept at creating or digging up dirt on opponents. One of his tricks included rummaging—literally—through the garbage of political opponents. In fact, former Nixon White House Counsel John Dean stated “Watergate prosecutors were interested in Rove’s activities in 1972, but because they had bigger fish to fry they did not aggressively investigate him.

This strategy of smear, Rove learned so well from Segretti was used with devastating effects against Republican Senator John McCain in the run-up to the 2000 Election. Remember all those lies about McCain being a homosexual, his wife being a drug abuser along with him supposedly fathering a Black child? All those tales are stained with the fingerprints of Rove, tricks he learned from his mentor Segretti. The rise of this “president was made possible by Rove. Sure, having the last name of Bush didn’t hurt. But it was Rove who declared in 1989, “I can make George W. Bush president if he wants to be. We can run him for governor, use that as a platform, and then use Texas and family connections and business connections and fund-raising to make him president, if George wants to do that. Obviously, Bush did, and between the mudslinging and lying, Rove secured the White House for our alcoholic/coke-head “president.

We all know now that the 2000 Election was stolen in Florida. In retrospect, the purging of Florida’s Black vote was the precursor of this Purgegate prosecutor scandal now enveloping Capitol Hill. Who can forget the spectacle of Congressional Black Caucus members trying  in vain to find one senator willing to stand up for the voting rights of Blacks? All those senators who refused to stand with Black Floridians aided and abetted this current action against these prosecutors. It was their duty to uphold the promise of the Constitution and repel this blatantly offensive act of voter suppression. Instead, in typical spineless fashion they snuffed out the voices of those who are so often voiceless. In doing so, they damaged the county by rolling out the red carpet for Rove and company.
