Senator Obama’s Berlin Pinnacle

Obama’s European well-wishers aren’t numbskulls; there’re fully aware of the fact that, if elected President of the U.S., Senator Obama won’t trample underfoot and pooh-pooh the interests of other nations and fellow humans of our global world-village.

[International: A Candidate Storms Europe]

The jig’s up.

According to a recent poll and survey released by many media outlets here in Europe, 76 per cent of Germans wish that Senator Barack Obama becomes the next president of the U.S. while 10 only percent favor Senator John McCain.

Another poll released by the “Daily Telegraph” found out and suggests that 52 per cent of all Europeans root for Obama while 65 per cent of French people would cast their ballots for him.

Senator Obama delivered a stupendous speech on June 24 in Berlin, at the “Victory Column” in front of more than 200,000 well-wishers, tourists and other rubbernecks.

On subjecting his landmark speech to semiotic reading as well as discourse analysis, any thinking man or woman may entitle it: “The future of the world nations from the perspective of the U.S. and within the framework of the interests of God’s own country, the only remaining superpower.”

On the 24th of June, the elements cooperated with fantastic weather conditions; it was sunny, fair in Berlin. Senator Obama’s plane touched down in the morning. He met German top officials in the morning and in the afternoon.

While he was at “Adlon Hotel”, Berlin, one of Obama’s admirers sent a book with return postage for Obama to autograph it. On the eve of his arrival in Berlin, a car driver rammed and ran the fence cordoning off the venue, the “Victory Column,” and spilled out a red liquid. The mobster was arrested promptly.

Seven hundred cops, flatfeet and rozzers were mobilized and assigned to the protection of the prominent American guest who was addressing the citizens of Berlin and the denizens of the world. More than 200,000 people turned out and thronged the “Victory Column” in order to effusively welcome the Democratic presidential torch-bearer from the Windy City.

When the American special guest of Berlin and of Lord Mayor Klaus Wowereit took to the rostrum, he broached several subject matters including tearing down the walls of racism, segregation, ethnic and religious barriers; his original intention was to address the people of Berlin and of the world at the “Brandenburg Gate.”

Obama called for the strengthening and the deepening of Transatlantic ties between the U.S. and Europe so as to overcome the challenges of the 21st century – especially to notch up a clear victory over scourges and dangers such as religious murderous and inhumane extremism, climate changes and nuclear proliferation.

Attendees at this landmark speech found the address “promising” and “inspiring”; others hoped Senator Obama “will implement this manifesto.” The event that unfolded on June 24 in Berlin will certainly remain memorable.

Now that Barack Obama has overcome the main hurdles during his tour of the Near East, the Middle East and Europe, the next and last way stations in Paris and London are neither a facer nor a poser — even though they can’t be put down as a cinch.

All critics, detractors and ill-wishers of the Democratic presidential contender, including the journalist of “Deutschlandfunk” –German Radio– who was urging his guest and compatriot to scupper Obama’s presidential striving, and the journalist of “FAZ for Germany” who was advising the Clinton Campaign to resort to smear tactics, if they swallow their pride and envy and remain fair and honest, will humbly agree that Obama put on a flawless and successful performance from Kabul through Jerusalem to Berlin.

Before flying back to the U.S., Senator Obama will get a meet-and-greet at the “Elysee Palace,” the official residence of the French President. He’ll meet French president Nicolas Sarkozy by 5 o’clock local time, hold a joint press conference with him and fly on to London, to button up his international tour by meeting English top officials including PM Gordon Brown.

Obama’s European well-wishers aren’t numbskulls; there’re fully aware of the fact that, if elected President of the U.S., Senator Obama won’t trample underfoot and pooh-pooh the interests of other nations and fellow humans of our global world-village.

If Obama’s vision doesn’t evince true and insightful leadership, what does it represent then?
