SHARE Backs NYC Students for NAACP Academic Contest
Ninety-five percent of NYC ACT-SO students graduate from high school and 85% go on to colleges and universities.
SHARE has donated $2,000 for students from the New York City ACT-SO to attend the NAACP’s National “Olympics of the Mind” Weekend in Houston, Texas.
This year, more than 1,200 gold medalists from across the U.S. competed at nationals for more than $100,000 in cash along with other prizes, including fully loaded laptop computers. SIx of the 79 medals awarded went to New York City Youth; one gold, three silvers, and two bronze medals.
ACT-SO, the NAACP's Academic, Cultural, Technological and Scientific Olympics, is a yearlong achievement program designed to recruit, stimulate, and encourage high academic and cultural achievement among African-American and Latino high school students. ACT-SO includes 26 categories of competition in the Sciences, Arts and Humanities, including Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Biology and Medicine.
Ninety-five percent of NYC ACT-SO students graduate from high school and 85% go on to colleges and universities. "Simply stated, today's investment in our undeserved minority high school students of African-American and Hispanic descent in New York City, is a critical investment in the long term success of the city," says Anton Tomlinson, Chairman of NYC ACT-SO. The New York City program has produced a National Westinghouse Science Winner, a NASA Science Presentation and Award Recipient, and a General Electric researcher.
The NYC ACT-SO is an all-volunteer driven program that operates with gifts, donations, and in-kind services from individuals and organizations. "SHARE’s commitment to these programs, and to the development of future leaders in the energy industry, helps to ensure the continued supply of reliable, clean and affordable electricity,” said SHARE President Frank T. Fraley.
SHARE (Safe, Healthy, Affordable and Reliable Energy), is a non-profit coalition of organizations committed to ensuring the continued supply of reliable, clean and affordable electricity for all New Yorkers.
