A new New York Times poll confirms that most Americans are arriving at the same conclusion we made in an earlier commentary this week–that the Tea Party is extremely destructive and is a threat to the U.S. national interest and even survival as a major country.

The Tea Party does not consider what’s best for the United States; it’s all about what’s good for the myopic interests of the Tea Party. Much of its agenda, disguised in the language of “conservatism,” and “fiscal responsibility” is inspired by deep-seated hatred of the nation’s fist Black president.

“The Tea Party is now viewed unfavorably by 40 percent of the public and favorably by just 20 percent, according to the poll,” The New York Times reports in today’s edition. “In mid-April 29 percent of those polled viewed the movement unfavorably, while 26 percent viewed it favorably.”

Yes, there is national frustration, over three costly wars, unemployment at 9.1% –it dipped slightly on the news that 117,000 jobs were created in July– and with lawmakers in Washington being engaged in petty tribal warfare with no consideration for the millions of Americans who can’t buy food, who can’t keep a roof over their head, and who can’t pay the bills.

Instead of strategizing 24 x 7 about how to create jobs, lawmakers were engaged in grandstanding about which side, the Democrats or Republicans, would “win” and get their way over how to reduce the federal deficit and increase the debt ceiling.

This was the worst sham crisis in recent years and it was concocted by the Republican Party and its Kamikaze wing, the Tea Party. Why hold the entire nation and the world’s economy hostage when it was well known that such an acrimonious debate, with threats of the U.S. government defaulting, would have lasting adverse consequences even when, finally, an “agreement” was hammered out? Could it be that, indeed, the Tea Party has a death wish for the entire country?

The poll also found that 57% disapprove of how Rep. Boehner, who failed to leash the Tea Party, is doing his job.

The markets, here and abroad, will gyrate wildly for a long time as a consequence of the Kamikaze politics.

The U.S. was considered the world’s bank of first resort because of its long history of stability and its ability to rebound from political and economic crises. However, this is the 21st century: in today’s increasingly competitive global economic environment, the U.S. no longer enjoys absolute advantage in production of goods and services; it no longer enjoys unchallenged military might, which in the past allowed it to impose its will when it did not enjoy economic advantage and; it no longer has monopoly over science and technology since information now is readily diffused around the world.

Since the Tea Party has now destroyed America’s reputation around the world by raising questions about whether the government will always be able to pay its bill, the U.S. needs to do the things that will allow the country to remain competitive. These entail investment in education, infrastructure building and repair, and new-technology or “green” jobs.

Private corporations, sitting on trillions of dollars in cash, have proven incapable of charting the bold new world that the U.S. needs. The Obama administration, and the divided Congress, due to Republican and Tea Party intransigence has become paralyzed.

People must demand that the Tea Party not stand in the way of government measures to put food on the tables throughout America by creating jobs.
