Three Prominents Endorse Obama

It remains to be seen how the Clinton campaign will react to the Reich endorsement. Former Clinton cabinet member, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson, was denounced as a “Judas by Clinton acolyte James Carville recently after the governor endorsed Obama.

Following an exclusive Black Star News article this morning announcing that 90% of 300 undeclared superdelegates had said in a survey that they would support Senator Barack Obama, three prominent endorsements that could encourage superdelegates to announce came this afternoon.

Since last Monday, Senator Obama has been endorsed by 10 superdelegates. At least five more superdelegates plan to declare backing for the Illinois senator before the April 22 vote in Pennsylvania, The Black Star News has learned.

“We want the party to unify behind our candidate,” one superdelegate, who requested that he not be identified, told The Black Star.

Today, former senators David Boren (D-Oklahoma) and Sam Nunn (D-Georgia) said they are backing Obama, as did former Bill Clinton cabinet member Robert Reich. While not superdelegates, all are prominent Democrats.

“We need a president who has the temperament of a leader – a sharp, incisive, strategic mind, a rare capacity for self criticism, and a willingness to hear contrary points of view,” Nunn said.

Said Boren: “Our most urgent task is to end the divisions in our country, to stop the political bickering, and to unite our talents and efforts. Americans of all persuasions are pleading with our political leaders to bring us together. I believe Senator Obama is sincerely committed to that effort. He has made a non-partisan approach to all issues a top priority.”

“Senator Obama is also a person of sound and good judgment. He had the good judgment more than five years ago to warn against our involvement in this tragic and costly war. He also understands the need to repair our partnerships with other nations and to more effectively use diplomacy to serve our national interests,” Boren added.

It remains to be seen how the Clinton campaign will react to the Reich endorsement.

Editor’s Note: An earlier version of Kamau’s article mistakenly referred to Nunn, Boren and Reich as superdelegates.
