After
more than 24 months of uninterrupted job growth, the Obama Administration has
created 4 million net new jobs and completely replaced all the jobs lost
by the George W. Bush recession.
The Bush recession was
created by unfunded wars in Afghanistan and Iraq and tax cuts for the
very rich which deprived the nation from money to invest in the economy,
infrastructure and public employment.
Mitt Romney is
campaigning on the same Bush policies, assuring that the economy, like
Great Britain’s, would quickly reverse into a recession.
The job growth has now pushed down unemployment, which was one approaching 10%, down to 8.1%.
Although
the rate of job growth slowed last month to 115,000, after averaging
about 250,000 in previous months, economist believe there will be an
acceleration during the summer, especially if the Republicans don’t
kill the proposed transportation build — summer is peak construction
season. The Republicans insist on attaching the Keystone XL oil pipeline
deal to the bill; President Obama has promised to veto it if that
provision is included.
Ironically, Republicans believe that their prospect of
winning the White House and Congress is if there’s a sharp decline in
the economy.
Candidate Mitt Romney and other Republicans have
already been gloating because the rate of job growth –while still
positive– has slowed down. Romney boasted that the recovery was “way off.” Let’s see if they succeed in
killing the transportation bill and also reject other measures to
stimulate the economy between now and November.
