It’s been over a month and George Zimmerman has yet to be charged with the shooting death of Trayvon Martin. American citizens across racial lines are appalled at the blatant case of vigilante justice and racial-profiling.

Numerous marches and demonstrations have taken place in several cities including, New York City, Atlanta, Chicago, Washington D.C., and Sanford, Florida. President Barack Obama on March 23rd remarked, “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon Martin.” He offered words of sympathy and comfort to Martin’s grieving parents.

Over two million signatures have been collected via www.change.org demanding that Zimmerman be arrested and charged with Martin’s shooting.

Here’s the background.

On February 26, 2012 in Sanford, Florida 28 year old Zimmerman, a neighborhood watchperson followed 17 year old Trayvon Martin as he walked back to his family’s home from the store carrying only a bag of Skittles and a bottle of Iced-Tea.

Zimmerman called 911 to notify them of Martin’s suspicion, stating that there had been several recent break-ins in the neighborhood and he thought Martin to be a suspicious character, because he was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and looking around. The 911 operator asked Zimmerman if he was following Martin, to which he answered yes. The 911 operator then told Zimmerman to stop following Martin, a direct order that he ignored.

He continued his following of Martin, which led possibly to a chase, a scuffle and the ultimate shooting and death of Martin. When the police arrived on the scene they let Zimmerman go free and chalked the incident up as a case of self-defense.

Zimmerman has documented history of several 911 calls about “suspicious” Black males.

After all of the public outrage, countless demonstrations and the great disappointment expressed by political leaders, clergy members, sports figures and entertainers alike, George Zimmerman still hasn’t been brought to justice leaving millions with the question, “Who is George Zimmerman, and why hasn’t he been charged in Trayvon Martin’s shooting?”

George Zimmerman is the son of retired Magistrate Judge Robert J. Zimmerman. His mother Gladys Zimmerman is a court clerk. This information may answer the question of why George Zimmerman hasn’t been charged with Trayvon Martin’s shooting.

He reportedly has three closed arrests: #1 – 7/18/05 – for resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer div 10. #2 – 8/9/05 – for domestic violence div 44. #3 – 8/10/05 – for domestic violence div 46.

We must continue to work diligently for justice–not only Trayvon Martin, but also for Ramarley Graham, Sean Bell, Amadou Diallo and the countless unarmed Black men that have been gunned down in cold blood across the country, for simply being Black and “fitting the description.”

As President Barack Obama campaigns for a second term in office, we must do our job of keeping these critical issues in the forefront, and assuring that an incident like this never happens again.
