Will Obama Expose Mitt Romney’s Agenda of Lies at Tuesday’s Debate?

President Obama must point out that anyone who only cares for half of the country doesn’t deserve to be president. He must also illustrate Mr. Romney’s hypocrisy, on attacking the 47 percent for not paying taxes, while, he refused to show us his tax-returns.

On Tuesday, President Obama must expose former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as an uncaring, unprincipled, rich corporate politician—who has engaged in serial mendacity in an attempt to gain the American Presidency.

But just how far will President Obama go to tar-and-feather Mr. Romney on his record of flip flops and lies?

Tuesday’s much anticipated town-hall style debate will be held at Hofstra University, in Long Island, New York and will be moderated by CNN’S Candy Crowley. Ms. Crowley has raised some controversy, regarding her role as moderator, because of these comments she made, on an Oct 3. CNN program: “Once the table is kind of set by the town hall questioner, there is then time for me to say, ‘Hey, wait a second, what about X, Y and Z?”

Both campaigns have complained, and, or, asked for clarifications of the rules the moderator must follow from the Commission on Presidential Debates—who took over the overseeing of presidential debates from the League of Women Voters in 1987. Reportedly, Ms. Crowley isn’t supposed to ask follow-up questions, on her own, outside of the questions selected from the town hall audience—a stipulation she, apparently, didn’t agree to.

There has been much talk since President Obama’s dull debate performance two weeks ago. Since that time, Mr. Romney has closed the gap in national presidential polls with the November Elections only a few weeks away. Many agree President Obama must be much more forceful in making the case for why he should remain in the White House.

Advisor and Former White Press Secretary Robert Gibbs acknowledged, of the first debate, President Obama knew “when he walked off that stage, and he also knew as he watched the tape of that debate, that he has to be more energetic."  Senior Obama campaign advisor David Axelrod said Tuesday President Obama would be “aggressive in making the case for his view of where we should go as a country.” Mr. Axelrod also said Mr. Romney had “serially walked away from his own proposals” and that “certainly the president is going to be willing to challenge him on it.”

President Obama must do more that “challenge” Mr. Romney. He must destroy any notion—in the mind of voters—that Mr. Romney is competent, or, credible to be the President of the United States.

Since President Obama’s flat performance many have wondered why he allowed Mr. Romney to “win” that debate. Why was he so carefully non-assertive? Was he afraid if he attacked Governor Romney too vociferously it would hurt his “likability” numbers with independent voters? Is he just another Democrat lacking the killer instinct? Or, was it as veteran reporter Professor Earl Caldwell—of the Caldwell Chronicles 99.5 WBAI—said that Mr. Obama’s mind, that Wednesday, was on his wife, Michelle, and their wedding anniversary?

Now, although, Mr. Romney has been declared the “winner” of the first debate his “win” was based, solely, on style devoid of any substance. That debate can be summed up this way: President Obama spoke softly and Romney lied loudly. Unfortunately, political debates, for far too many, have become nothing more than grotesque sideshows where thoughtful dialogue get lost in the noise and personality hoopla.

President Obama “lost” the first debate because he allowed Mr. Romney’s lies to drown out the factual realities. Over and over again, Governor Romney lied, or flip-flopped on positions he had previously taken. On Tuesday, President Obama must find ways to point out the multiple inconsistencies the Republican challenger has had on issues like healthcare, Medicare, Social Security and taxes.

Governor Romney was allowed to sound like a magnanimous populist, even though we recently found out—on the now infamous 47 percent video—that he has already written-off half of the American citizenry. For those who, shockingly, might not have heard, this is what Mr. Romney said to some of his wealthy friends "There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right -- there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent on government, who believe that, that they are victims, who believe that government has the responsibility to care for them. Who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing. My job is not to worry about those people. I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

The president must make it clear someone who thinks like this is the wrong person to be president—for a host of reasons. Will Mitt Romney find jobs for all of America, or, just for half of America? Does a real leader so cavalierly dismisses, into irrelevance, half of his countrymen?

We already know Mr. Romney outsourced jobs as the head of Bain Capital. And he has attacked President Obama’s record on jobs, but, wasn’t Massachusetts ranked 47—out of the 50 states—in job creation under Governor Romney? Yet, worst of all, here we hear him saying he believes half of America is nothing more than shiftless vagabonds.

It’s astounding this tellingly insensitive remark isn’t resonating with more Americans. In Tuesday’s Hofstra town hall President Obama must point out that anyone who only cares for half of the country doesn’t deserve to be president. He must also illustrate Mr. Romney’s hypocrisy, on attacking the 47 percent for not paying taxes, while, he refused to show us his tax-returns.

President Obama has agreed he must be more aggressive against Mr. Romney. Many wonder just how aggressive will he be? Will he go for the jugular? Some argue if the president is seen as too aggressive it could hurt him.

However, President Obama should indeed go for the jugular and put this contest away. True, he should be careful not to seem out of character in doing so. The Hofstra town hall forum maybe his friend in this regard, for, he can answer the questions of audience members and hit Mr. Romney hard without having to stare into his face.

In the first debate, the president deployed a defensive posture to protect his lead. Tuesday, President Obama must go on the offensive and unmask Governor Romney as a prolific prevaricator who is ill-equipped to champion the concerns of America’s middle-class.

Given Governor Romney’s record that shouldn’t be very difficult to do.
