A-Rod Deserved Crowning

A-Rod led the league in homers, was the Triple Crown winner on his team that won the division title. He is bound to win a gold glove for his play at third base and he stole over 20 bases. That feat of over 40 homers and over 20 stolen bases by a third basemen has never been done before in major league baseball history. And the year Don "Donnie Baseball" Mattingly won the MVP in 1985 his team didn’t even make the playoffs

Today’s sports observations range from The Jets and Giants to Mayweather and A-Rod. It is as plain as night and day. The New York Giants and the New York Jets are going in different directions and rapidly. The season here always opens with the thought of both teams meeting in the Super Bowl. But that is a long forgotten idea now around here in the,â€? Big Apple” although both teams play in New Jersey.

The Giants are now so good they are winning games they are supposed to and losing games they are supposed to win. But to beat them it takes historic efforts to do so. For example, the Minnesota Vikings’ victory over the Giants was an historic one. Never had a team won via an interception for a touchdown and a kickoff and punt return for scores also. And the Giants lost by just a mere three points and on an a heroic field goal. And remember the Giants had blown a 28 yard field goal just before the first half ended.

Then the bad boys from Philadelphia, the Eagles invade the Meadowlands and the Giants simply roughed up and manhandled the ailing crew to hold down first place in their division.

The Jets on the other hand keep getting handed bad luck—defeats and injuries. So much so that the rumors keep coming about head coach, Herm Edwards departing these parts. Edwards, a man of class and character, has repeatedly remarked he is staying put. Reminds one of that line from the legendary, West Side Story, “When you’re a Jet you’re a Jet all the way.”

Injuries, lack of quarterbacks and an ailing defense have hurt the Jets big time. But one has to admire their effort and their coach. And like the cry so often heard in Brooklyn years ago, when the beloved Brooklyn Dodgers played there: “Wait until next year.”

One has to also admire now welterweight Floyd Mayweather Jr. His win this past Saturday after moving up a weight class shows he is simply the very best in the game right now. And it is his second straight fight that he ended with vicious body punches. He reminds me of my beloved Robertoâ€? Hands of Stone” Duran. He loves to fight, knows how to fight and is always ready and in shape to fight. And another Duran ingredient he has is the intellect and heart of a champion. He doesn’t have that blind stupid heart. The one he remarked about once stating, “Heart can get you killed in this game.” No, he knows his craft and he is the best in the game and moving toward all time greatness. Great job uncle Roger Mayweather, keeping and getting your most talented nephew in shape physically and mentally.

Man I get back from Panama and they are still dogging Alex Rodriguez for winning the MVP. A-Rod led the league in homers, was the triple crown winner on his team that won the division title. He is bound to win a gold glove for his play at third base and he stole over 20 bases. That feat of over 40 homers and over 20 stolen bases by a third basemen has never been done before in major league baseball history. And the year Don “Donnie Baseball” Mattingly won the MVP in 1985 his team didn’t even make the playoffs.

DID U KNOW: Celtic Great and legend, Bill Russell wasn’t big on practice and didn’t do much of it. legendary Celtic coach and GM, Red Auerbach didn’t want to draft the great Bob Cousy. Auerbach drafted the great Larry Bird and waited a year to get him. Baseball great Dave Winfield is the only man ever drafted by the NBA, ABA, NFL and Major league baseball. Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Walt Frazier were all All-American forwards in college that were switched to the guard position once they entered the pro ranks. All three made not only the NBA hall of fame but were selected as members of the 50 greatest players ever And they were.
