The New York Jets opening drive against the St. Louis Rams was their fourth straight game that they scored on their first possession, and they have won five of their last six games.

Nonetheless, Thursday’s upcoming game against New England, a team who beat the Jets 19-10 in their first meeting the second week of the season will be a curious game to watch.

All season long, head coach Eric Mangini has been pontificating about the need to play well in all phases of the game: offense, defense and special teams. The Jets 47-3 victory over the Rams was indicative of such improvement.

“Our players of the week this week for the St. Louis game – offensively was Dustin Keller, defensively was Eric Barton, on special teams it was Jay Feely,” said Mangini, who then was questioned about the emotional level of the team.

“Everybody understands that by winning against the Rams, and them winning against Buffalo, that this is for first place in the division at this point in the season. That’s always exciting. It’s always exciting to play a division game. It’s always exciting to play New England. None of that is really new ground. I think we all appreciate that. With that being said,” he added, it is important to understand “how difficult of a game it is.”

For assurance, the New York Jets signed former Pro Bowler cornerback Ty Law for one season; he’s expected to start at safety against the Patriots.

“I am in shape physically as far as wind and stuff like that, but it’s hard to go out there and actually hit somebody,” said Law who was a five-time Pro Bowl selection and played nine seasons with the Patriots and made the Pro Bowl in his only season with the Jets in 2006.” That is going to be the adjustment but the conditioning and everything shouldn’t be a factor.”

Law played last season with the Kansas City Chiefs.

“It’s going to be a challenge mentally because I am probably going to get more opportunities now,” said Law, than “I will have ever seen in my career.”
Thursday’s game against the Patriots will be an interesting game in terms of strength and weaknesses of both teams will be revealed. “What I’m excited about is playing two games,” Mangini said, with “consistency,” referring to Thursday’s game with New England.

“Where there was complementary football, where we minimized turnovers, where we’ve been able to minimize mistakes; generate turnovers and run the ball effectively. Those things excite me. I understand the environment. I understand the team that we’re playing against. It’s a good opportunity for us.”
