KIDS OF AFRICA

Kids of Africa, a Swiss initiative, is a children’s home operating in Uganda. It takes care of 94 abandoned children in ten family homes, each headed by a loving foster mother. Kids of Africa is raising the children to be the backbone of the next generation of Ugandan society and to their contributing to improve the futures of similarly disadvantaged youngsters.

“RUN FOR FUN”

To raise funds for the school project, and to celebrate their 9th anniversary, Kids of Africa is organising the 4th Edition “Run for Fun” on Sunday 5th October 2014. The inaugural run in 2011 was a success, with over 300 runners of all ages participating; in 2012 there were over 500 runners. The year we expect 1000 runners to build on last year’s event when we had 780. As previously, the races will be organized by Activate Uganda Ltd, the country’s leading professional sports event & timing management company. As with earlier editions, the starting point will be from Kids of Africa at Bwerenga (Wakiso District). This is 4km from Kawuku, which is 24km along the Entebbe Rd.

3 RACES, 5 AGE CATEGORIES & SCENIC ROUTES

There will be 5km, 10km and 21km races, with age categories: Under 10 (5km only), 10-14, 15-18, 19-49, 50+. Participants should meet at 6:30am to collect their event T-shirts and race numbers. The 21km will start at 7:30am sharp; the 10km race at 7:55am and the 5km at 8:15am. The courses are set in Wakiso District between Kampala and Entebbe on the shores of Lake Victoria. As well as being challenging, the routes take runners through local countryside, villages and have great views over Lake Victoria.

The Red Cross will again provide medical back up at the event.

PRIZES

The first three male and female finishers in each age category will receive medals. There will also be cash prizes in all age categories, male and female, in all 3 races.

FUNDS RAISED

Kids of Africa would like to thank the sponsors and runners who made the 2013 Run for Fun 3rd edition such a great success. We raised UGX 55,000,000 which went to Phase 1 of construction of the Kids Pioneer School. This year our target is between UGX 75,000,000 to UGX 100,000,000 so we can start Phase 2 of the school.

The funds raised last year allowed us to finish the first stage of the school, which has been up and running for a full school year now. It has 125 students at present, 65 from Kids of Africa village and another 60 students from the community. Some of these students from the community are fully sponsored by Kids of Africa or by individual sponsors who have connections with Kids of Africa.

This year the funds raised will target the sports facilities and equipment for the school. Sport is a very important part of the philosophy of Kids of Africa and Kids Pioneer School. We like to offer as wide a variety of sports as possible e.g. running, football, netball, tag rugby, volleyball, tennis, and table tennis.

SPONSORS

We must give a big thank you to ROKO Construction who are our main sponsors both last year and this year. Thank you also to BARCLAYS for being the co-sponsor and for the great support from the other sponsors for making this event possible………including Orient Bank, Yako Finance, Varsani Electric, Aluclad, Spedag Interfreight.

This year, the sponsorship of Orient Bank has made it possible for 100 underprivileged children from a number of charities in the area to participate in RUN FOR FUN.
