One of the suspects in the Boston bombing was shot dead early today in a shootout by police in Boston while his brother, the other suspect is believed to now be cornered by security forces.

Dead is Tamerlan Tsarnaev, 26, who was mortally wounded after a shootout when they led police on a chase. The suspects were confronted after they had been involved in a shootout with MIT campus police in Boston that left one officer dead and another wounded.

The brother who survived the shootout and is believed to be now barricaded in a Watertown, Massachusetts, house is Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The suspect is reportedly in possession of firearms including additional explosive devices similar to the one used for the deadly bombing of the Boston Marathon.

The two suspects are reported to be of Chechnyan origin.

The police went into action after the MIT shootout drew attention, hours after the F.B.I released photographs and videotapes showing the brothers.
Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick said Boston residents should stay indoors, with their doors locked.

The bombing Monday at the Boston Marathon killed three people and wounded more than 165. The brothers’ motives are still unknown and authorities hope to capture the surviving brother alive.

Chechnya is a mainly Muslim region of Russia that has tried to break away in the past. The Central government in Russia brutally crushed uprisings there killing many thousands of separatists and civilians in Chechnya.
