On Thursday afternoon, a Minnesota jury, just before Christmas Eve, found Kim Potter guilty on all charges in the shooting death of 20-year-old Daunte Wright.

Potter, 49, was found guilty of first- and second-degree manslaughter. The former Minnesota police officer had said she mistakenly pulled her gun and fired it instead of her Taser when she killed Wright.

The jury had deliberated for some 28 hours and five minutes. Because of this, many were predicting a mistrial.

During the trial, Potter’s defense team argued that Wright caused his own death by not complying with the officers. At the same time, they also said although Potter made a mistake by pulling her gun, instead of her Taser, that she was nonetheless within her rights to pull her gun and shoot Wright.

Potter killed Wright on April 11, 2021, in Brooklyn Center area of Minnesota after he was pulled over by a junior officer, riding with Potter, who decided to stop Wright for having an air freshener hanging from his mirror. It was later said Wright had expired tags.

Potter, the senior officer, testified that if it were up to her she would not have pulled Wright over even for the expired tags and cited the status of things at the DMV relating to the COVID situation.

After Wright was pulled over by the officer riding with Potter, the decision was made to arrest him for failure to appear in court on a gun charge warrant.

Wright was shot to death when he tried to get back into his car.

Many have decried the recklessness of this veteran police officer who took the life of Daunte Wright during the trial of now convicted killer-cop Derek Chauvin, who killed George Floyd after kneeling on his neck for nine minutes and twenty-nine seconds.

Kim Potter’s conviction now marks the second successfully prosecution against a police officer who killed a Black person that was overseen by the office of Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison.
