(Georgia)–Jury deliberations began today in Brunswick, Georgia in the trial of three white vigilantes charged with the murder of jogger Ahmaud Arbery.

On Tuesday morning, after the final rebuttal from lead prosecutor Linda Dunikoski, the nearly all-white jury was given their final jury instructions for deliberations by Superior Court Judge Timothy Walmsley.

The fate of Travis McMichael, his father Gregory McMichael and William “Roddie” Bryan is now in the hands of these jurors.

The defense has claimed these three white men acted lawfully under the state’s citizen’s arrest law (which has now been repealed) when they killed Arbery after trying to apprehend him. After chasing Arbery for several minutes, Travis McMichael shot Arbery who was trying to elude him. McMichael claimed he did so because Arbery grabbed for his gun.

But prosecutor Dunikosk has disputed that defense saying, “All three of these defendants made assumptions — made assumptions about what was going on that day, and they made their decision to attack Ahmaud Arbery in their driveways because he was a Black man running down the street.”

Deliberations are continuing.
