The Dream Defenders will close out its “People’s Session” tomorrow morning with an introduction of “Trayvon’s Law.”

The youth-led organization, now in the fourth week of its occupation of the Florida State Capitol, has demanded Governor Scott convene a special legislative session to address the state’s “Stand Your Ground” law, racial profiling and the school-to-prison pipeline, a cocktail of extreme school discipline policies that punish minor transgressions, such as dress code violations, with suspensions and arrests.

Governor Scott has repeatedly refused to call the special session, but the group made some headway on Friday when Florida House Leader Will Weatherford announced that he will hold a ‘hearing’ this fall on Stand Your Ground. The Dream Defenders are continuing to pressure the Governor for a session that addresses all of the issues, and are working behind the scenes with Florida legislators to earn support their demands.

Over several days last week, the Dream Defenders have held a “People’s Session,” where subject-matter and personal experience experts from across Florida and the country, testified on-the- record about “stand your ground” vigilantism, racial profiling and Florida’s school-to-prison pipeline.

The group deliberated over the bill language over the weekend and will close the session tomorrow with an official vote on the proposed legislation. They will also launch a dedicated website with video footage and transcripts of testimony from the “People’s Session” in the coming weeks.

The Dream Defenders will hold a news conference at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 8, 2013 Florida State Capitol, Governor’s Office and via livestream at ustre.am/11VhV to introduce “Trayvon’s Law” and talk about the next phase of their #TakeOverFL campaign. The “People’s Session” will convene immediately afterward.
