Newly Formed Organization Launches 2016 Voter Protection Initiative

Long time voting rights advocate Barbara Arnwine has joined forces with voting rights and justice colleagues to form the Transformative Justice Coalition (TJC).

On Tuesday, November 3, 2015, TJC will host a kick-off event honoring Congressman John Conyers, Jr. and celebrating Ms. Arnwine’s 40 years of justice advocacy.

The 5:00pm-7:00pm reception, at the Sphinx Club on Franklin Square, 1315 K Street, NW, Washington, DC will serve both as a fundraising launch for TJC and an Election Day kick-off of TJC’s 2016 Voting Rights and Election Protection Initiative. The event will be hosted by reality star and civil rights activist, the Rev. Omarosa Manigault.

“Congressman John Conyers and Barbara Arnwine have been unwavering advocates for the right to vote and making it easier for all Americans to register and vote,” noted TJC Board Chair Brenda Harding. “The 2016 elections will be about what kind of future we envision for our nation. Our commitment is to push back on efforts to turn back the clock on voting rights, put an end to our voracious appetite for incarceration, and end police misconduct.”

“As I have travelled the country talking with indigenous communities, African Americans, women, Latinos, Asian Americans, people with disabilities and others who have been marginalized on our society, it has become clear to me that if we are to achieve that more perfect union, where all individuals are valued and offered the opportunity to live up to our full potential, we need more than reform we need transformative change,” said Barbara Arnwine, TJC founder and President.

Congressman John Conyers has been a leading voice in Congress on ensure the right to vote and expanding the franchise. Mr. Conyers introduced or co-sponsored several measures that will restore the vitality and effectiveness of the Voting Rights Act including the bipartisan Voting Rights Amendment Act, which would make comprehensive improvements to the Voting Rights Act, the Democracy Restoration Act, which creates a national standard for the restoration of voting rights for ex-offenders and the Voter Empowerment Act, which modernizes our voting system by mandating the implementation of national standards for early voting, online registration and voting technology.

Ms. Arnwine a Duke University Law School graduate served for 26 years as the Executive Director of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law and currently host the weekly talk show, Igniting Change with Barbara Arnwine Radio Show on Radio One and teaches at Columbia University.

The Transformative Justice Coalition is a new network of organizations and individuals working on issues such as protecting voting rights, encouraging broader civic engagement, promoting dramatic policing reform, ending mass incarceration and advancing public awareness through strategic communications. Our efforts support the development of a new generation of racial justice and social justice leaders, promote African American women in law, inspire action to achieve racial equity in sports and facilitate international human rights.
