Friday, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, issued the following statement regarding the African Union:

“I am excited that the Biden-Harris Administration is leading the way on resetting our relationship and partnership with Africa, and I am especially excited that he intends to strengthen our support of the African Union.

“I have the utmost confidence that the Biden-Harris Administration will renew mutually beneficial and respectful engagement with the continent with an innovative Africa strategy through supporting the African Continental Free Trade Area agreement, addressing climate change, strengthening entrepreneurship and innovation, and supporting the Africa CDC, which addresses health issues in the region. This is a clear indication that the United States wants Africa as a mutual partner.

“This Administration also knows that key issues on the continent, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Tigray crisis in Ethiopia, the border conflict between Sudan and Ethiopia, and the Somalia-Kenya-dispute will take sustained diplomacy and constant communication with heads of state. I fully support the Biden-Harris Administration’s commitment in restoring and reinvigorating diplomatic relations with the continent and the African Union to advance a mutual better way of life.”
