The posterchild for presidential impeachment, Donald Trump, is continuing his racist Muslim ban policies.

On Friday, President Trump added six countries to his travel ban: Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, Myanmar, where the Rohingya Muslim minority is fleeing genocide, Eritrea, Sudan, Tanzania, and the former Soviet state, Kyrgyzstan.

Adem Bunkeddeko, a Ugandan immigrant who will be running against New York Congresswoman Yvette Clark this year, has condemned Trump’s actions.

“As a son of African immigrants, I find this travel ban extremely offensive,” says Adem Bunkeddeko of this travel ban expansion. “My parents fled civil war in Uganda to start a new life in America, and this executive order is a slap in the face to families like mine who sacrifice everything for a chance at a better life in this country. America has been a sanctuary for immigrants since its founding, and this recent executive order is racist, xenophobic, and just plain cruel. From family separation at the border to Muslim travel bans, the immigration policy of this administration has been a complete disaster.”

The Trump administration attempted to ban travel from Muslim-majority countries in 2017 and effectively restricted travel from Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, Venezuela, and North Korea in 2018.

Adem Bunkeddeko is an organizer and advocate in Central Brooklyn running for Congress in NY-9. He previously challenged incumbent Yvette Clarke in 2018, losing by less than two thousand votes. Through a career in public service, Bunkeddeko has tried to pay forward the sacrifices his family, who fled civil war in Uganda to start a life in America. He previously served on Brooklyn Community Board #8 where the people of his neighborhood have been turning for help because their elected representatives have neglected the affordable housing crisis.

Leading progressive organizations Lambda Independent Democrats (LID), Empire State Indivisible, and Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club have endorsed Adem Bunkeddeko in the crowded Congressional primary in NY-9.
