Civil Rights leaders and elected New York officials continue to praise President Obama’s Attorney General nominee, Loretta Lynch, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York.

“On behalf of all New Yorkers, I congratulate Loretta E. Lynch, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, on President Obama’s announcement,” said New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo.  “U.S. Attorney Lynch is a trailblazer who has served the public with distinction in her current role under two presidents. She has earned a well-deserved reputation as an aggressive but fair prosecutor, who has used her office to seek justice through both criminal and civil proceedings. I am confident that U.S. Attorney Lynch will bring those same qualities to her new position as our country’s top law enforcement official.”

“President Obama has made a fantastic choice by nominating Loretta Lynch for Attorney General,” said U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York). “I have long fought in the Senate to add more women to the federal bench, and am pleased to see such a highly qualified woman make history as the nation’s top law enforcement official.  Loretta Lynch has served with great distinction in Brooklyn, and her experience here as a prosecutor and working on terrorism will serve her exceptionally well in Washington. She is an exceptionally well-qualified candidate for the job, and she deserves a swift nomination process from Congress

“Loretta Lynch is a first rate attorney, talented law enforcement professional and principled public servant,” said Congressman Hakeem Jeffries (NY-08). “Her career journey is the absolute embodiment of the American dream, and she will serve this great country well as Attorney General. Brooklyn is proud that one of our own is on her way to lead the Department of Justice. The Senate must set aside partisan gamesmanship and swiftly confirm Ms. Lynch before the end of the year.”

“The nomination of Loretta Lynch to be the new Attorney General of the United States is applaudable and deserving,” said Rev. Al Sharpton, president of the National Action Network. “She is an excellent and worthy choice to succeed Attorney General Eric Holder in his groundbreaking work for the American people. I have known Ms. Lynch since she was on the team around the Abner Louima case in the late nineties. Though we have not always agreed on cases, I have always seen her operate in the most fair, balanced, and just manner. Americans would be served greatly by her becoming our next Attorney General and the President should be given kudos for such a nomination.”

“The NAACP commends President Obama for nominating Loretta E. Lynch to serve as the next Attorney General of the United States,” said Cornell William Brooks, NAACP President and CEO. “Her nomination could not have come at a more critical time in our nation’s history. As an attorney with extraordinary depth, breath and length of service in both the public and private sector, Ms. Lynch is uniquely qualified to lead the Department of Justice.  From her exemplary service with U.S.  Attorneys Office of Eastern District of New York to her experience prosecuting the Abner Louima case, Ms. Lynch is an excellent choice to succeed Attorney General Eric Holder in his groundbreaking work for the American people. We appreciate both her exceptional experience and her demonstrated commitment to the civil rights protection for all Americans. We look forward to working with Ms. Lynch to ensure that our nation’s voting rights laws, employment protection laws and anti-housing discrimination laws are strictly and fairly enforced.”

“I congratulate U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch on receiving President Obama’s nomination as United States Attorney General,” said New York State Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman. “I am proud of our work together to protect New Yorkers over the past four years, including our success in recovering millions of Medicaid dollars from unscrupulous actors. U.S. Attorney Lynch has time and time again demonstrated her commitment to ensuring there is one set of rules for everyone and to defending the principle of equal justice for all. I look forward to seeing her continue to uphold these most important tenets in her new position, and I urge the Senate to confirm her appointment as soon as possible.”

“Throughout an extraordinary career, Loretta Lynch has distinguished herself as one of our country’s finest prosecutors. As U.S. Attorney, she has been an invaluable and strong partner to my office and so many others on challenging cases, from international money laundering to sex trafficking,” said Cyrus R. Vance, Jr., New York County District Attorney. “But equally important, she cares deeply about the impact of prosecutorial decisions on everyone affected by our justice system, and strives not just to enhance public safety, but also fairness in our courts.  I congratulate her on this well-deserved nomination, and hope the Senate swiftly confirms her.”

“President Obama has chosen a great New Yorker as the country’s highest-ranking law enforcement official,” said New York mayor Bill de Blasio. “The nation is about to meet Loretta Lynch for the first time—but in the five boroughs, she is already known for her character, toughness and uncompromising sense of justice. She has never been afraid to hold those in power accountable under the law, or to fight for those facing inequity. I urge the Senate to recognize Loretta as the accomplished and respected leader she is, and confirm her as Attorney General.”

“President Obama’s selection of Loretta Lynch as his nominee to be the next United States Attorney General is an excellent, and fitting, choice,” said New York City Comptroller Scott M. Stringer. “She is a superb lawyer, with wide-ranging experience at the highest echelons of the legal profession. Her exemplary tenure as U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York has prepared her well to become our next Attorney General. I urge the U.S. Senate to confirm her as the country’s top law enforcement official.”
