The NAACP supported the articles of impeachment… President Trump placed his own personal political interests above the national interests of the United States, sought to undermine the integrity of the U.S. election process, and in doing so he endangered national security.

The NAACP has endorsed the impeachment of Donald Trump and sent out the following action alert:

On December 18, 2019, President Donald John Trump was impeached for “high crimes and misdemeanors” by the full House of Representatives.

The specific votes were 230 yeas to 197 nays on Article I, “abuse of power” and 229 yeas to 198 nays on Article II, “obstruction of Congress.” The impeachment of President Trump now enters a new phase. Despite the full House voting in favor of impeachment, President Trump is not removed from office, nor are his powers at all curbed. The evidence which led to the President’s impeachment is now forwarded to the full U.S. Senate, which is constitutionally obliged to hold a public trial. It is during this trial that key Members of the U.S. House serve as “managers,” presenting their case in which President Trump is allowed to defend himself.

The Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, Justice John Roberts, oversees the trial, at the conclusion of which a final vote is taken by all U.S. Senators, who serve as the jury. If 2/3 of the Senators (66 out of 100) vote to impeach, then the President is removed from office. If less than 2/3 vote to impeach, President Trump remains in his current position. The precise timeline for the Senate to act has yet to be determined.

The resolution impeaching him states that “President Trump abused the powers of the Presidency by ignoring and injuring national security and other vital national interests to obtain an improper personal political benefit. He has also betrayed the Nation by abusing his high office to enlist a foreign power in corrupting democratic elections.” The resolution then goes on to cite numerous examples of the President directing the White House and other Executive Agencies and offices to “defy a lawful subpoena” for records relating to the investigation and for directing “current and former Executive Branch officials not to cooperate with the committees…”

The NAACP supported the articles of impeachment. Through more than a dozen witnesses, more than 35 hours of oral, public testimony, one thing is clear: President Trump placed his own personal political interests above the national interests of the United States, sought to undermine the integrity of the U.S. election process, and in doing so he endangered national security. By encouraging foreign interests to interfere in a domestic U.S. Presidential election President Trump demonstrated that he has no respect for the struggle that many of us have gone through to register, to vote and be assured that our vote counts.

President Trump invited and sanctioned foreign interference by Russia in the 2016 Presidential election. He has encouraged Ukraine and China (that we know of) to intervene in the 2020 election. If left unchecked, he will clearly feel emboldened to continue to undermine our electoral process and our democracy. Moreover, he has consistently used the power of the Office of the President to conceal his conduct from the public and frustrate and obstruct the official, legal, House of Representatives inquiry.
