American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten issued the following statement in recognition of World Teachers’ Day:

Educators around the world do so much more than instruct students: They serve as counselors, nurses and caretakers for children facing increasingly complex challenges in an often overwhelming world. A teacher can offer comfort and safety in a time of distress, open a child’s eyes and help them discover new passions, and help them understand and navigate the world with confidence.

“Here in the United States, educators are the defenders of decency and the guardians of our democracy, serving on the frontlines of ensuring our Constitution and rule of law remains intact. Both here and abroad, teachers have become the first responders to everything—addressing students’ social and emotional needs in a world that is deeply challenged.

“Today, on World Teachers’ Day, we honor educators—our change agents—who have chosen one of the most stressful occupations, but who also enable a future to those who do not have access to opportunity otherwise. We encourage our young teachers to press on, and are grateful for our seasoned teachers who serve as mentors in the spirit of collaboration. We lift up their brilliant work as they shape young minds and instill an appreciation for diversity and a respect for differences.

“Most importantly, we express our sincere appreciation for the awesome responsibility educators across the globe have assumed—helping our next generation achieve the promise of a better life through education.”
