NEW YORK, NY – November 30, 2021 – In a surprise announcement for dozens of Bronx elementary school students, international music superstar and NBC daytime television host Kelly Clarkson announced that the “PS 103 Ensemble Stars” student chorus was selected as the NBC 4 New York “Star Choir” contest winner.
Clarkson shared the news during this afternoon’s episode of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” Click here for a link. The performance will air during tomorrow’s “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” broadcast, starting at 7pm on WNBC.
“Nearly 60 choirs entered WNBC’s ‘Star Choir’ community competition, representing the geographic and demographic diversity of our Tri-State area. They were amazing performers and displayed remarkable passion, energy and excitement. However, one choir rose above them all, and we are thrilled that the students of PS 103 have been awarded this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We cannot wait for their performance of ‘Up on a Housetop” tomorrow night,” said NBC 4 New York President and General Manager Eric Lerner.
The “PS 103 Ensemble Stars” are comprised of 35 students from the North Bronx elementary school. Active in their local community, the singers have performed at nursing homes, community events and on the Observation Deck at 1 World Trade Center. Their repertoire ranges from Classical and Spirituals to Inspirational, Jazz and R&B. The Choir will receive $10,000 in donations to support their national performance, including a $5,000 personal donation from Clarkson which was matched by “The Kelly Clarkson Show.”
“Our kids have gone through so much during the time of COVID – and for many, they are still getting used to seeing their friends in person. From the time we got the first email from WNBC inviting us to participate to the day we hit send and submitted our audition tape, our kids poured their hearts into this effort. They always dreamed of a chance to do something big and fulfill their wildest dreams. We are extremely grateful for this opportunity and cannot wait to represent our North Bronx community on a stage that is truly unlike any other,” said Choir Director Antoine Dolberry.
Entries in the “Star Choir” competition were accepted for youth singing groups residing within WNBC’s viewing areas in New York, New Jersey, Fairfield County, Connecticut and Pike County, Pennsylvania. The winning choir will be required to comply with all current COVID-19 protocols.
NBC 4 New York is the Tri-State’s television home of the “The Kelly Clarkson Show,” airing Monday through Friday at 2pm.
