East Harlem Tutorial Program (EHTP) and its five East Harlem Scholars Academies announced that virtual learning will continue for the remainder of the school year.

“In order to be proactive and protect the physical health of our students and staff, we’ve decided to continue our remote learning indefinitely,” explained Linara Davidson Greenidge, Managing Director of External Affairs. “Members of our community have expressed time and again that they appreciate us putting safety first. Making this decision now helps our families prepare, and aids our educators as they continue to become pioneers in virtual teaching, learning and care.”

EHTP closed its physical spaces on March 7 and 8 for precautionary deep cleaning; amid rising safety concerns, East Harlem Scholars Academies made the decision to close their doors on Friday, March 13. All of EHTP’s after-school programming quickly followed suit. To date, the organization has distributed some 700 laptops and 300 mobile hotspots; scholars had little to no interruptions in their learning. EHTP has also distributed 7000 grab-and-go breakfast and lunches, as well as fresh produce, to its families.

East Harlem reportedly has the second-highest number of cases of COVID-19 in Manhattan; in addition, it also has one of the highest rates of child and adult asthma in the country, making the community particularly vulnerable to the virus. Many families also shouldered the burden of immediate unemployment or decreased employment.

EHTP has already raised over $350,000 for its Emergency Assistance Fund, and recently approved the first 41 grants to help cover unexpected needs related to COVID-19. The organization plans to continue providing immediate, direct financial resources to its families as long as possible.

About East Harlem Tutorial Program:

EHTP prepares students with the academic skills, strength of character and emotional well-being to excel in high school and college, to lead in their communities, and to realize their best possible selves. Over six decades, the organization has grown from a small tutoring program into a multi-site college preparatory and after-school program, and is the operator of five Pre-K to 9 schools and a Teaching Residency.
