Internship Opportunities

The Office of Councilmember Ydanis Rodriguez is offering internship opportunities to undergraduate students and recent graduates in the District Office in Washington Heights and/or the City Hall Office located Downtown. All of our internships are challenging and educational, requiring a high level of self-initiative and commitment to New York City and the Northern Manhattan community. This is a great opportunity for interns to learn firsthand about currents events, the local political system, and public service.

Interns will learn firsthand about current events, the local political system, and have the opportunity to create lasting change in Northern Manhattan through the City Council office.

Requirements: Due to the nature of the work that interns will be doing, they must be computer literate (able to use Excel, Microsoft Office, Outlook) and have strong writing skills.

All internships are unpaid, although we do encourage interns to seek academic credit for their internships. The hourly commitment is flexible based on availability, but 10-15 hours per week is recommended.

Legislative Intern: Interns will work on compiling research of current and proposed laws, city data, policies in other municipalities, news articles, and organizations based on the office’s legislative priorities which include, but are not limited to: affordable housing and tenants’ rights, immigration reform, and early childhood education.

Communications Intern: Searching for a committed and media savvy individual interested in political communications, policy and press relations. Must have strong writing skills, grasp on current events in New York City government and a desire to learn. Responsibilities will include pitching stories, collecting and analyzing daily news articles, managing social media and more.

Social Work Intern: Intern will work with the constituent services department at our district office. Interns interact directly with constituents, helping them earn housing placement, gain residency or citizenship status and more. Interns will also be responsible for organizing 1-2 workshops during the internship in order to educate residents on various themes depending on their interests, such as workers’ rights, tenants’ rights, or immigration rights.

Community organizing Intern: Interns will work with the Community Liaison on planning community meetings and events, working with tenants to form tenant associations and more. Interns will interact with local community organizations on issues that effect Northern Manhattan. This internship will operate out of the district office and have direct interaction with constituents and community partners.

Administrative Intern: Daily responsibilities include answering the phone, going through the mail, organizing files, and updating the database.
