Yesterday, Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), the highest-ranking Latino in U.S. Congress, released the following statement on the first day of Hispanic Heritage Month, 2019.

Today we mark the start of Hispanic Heritage Month at a time when celebrating our rich heritage, diverse culture, and countless achievements has never mattered more. It is up to us to rise above the hateful rhetoric and uncertainty of this era and proudly share with the American people our shared stories of hard work and sacrifice, of family and faith, of patriotism, of innovation, of creative inspiration and so much more.

“From the Hispanic American servicemen and women who fight for our freedoms abroad, to the Latino and Latina musicians, actors and athletes who inspire countless fans, to the hardworking entrepreneurs, families, students and Dreamers who continue to shape this country, we are the nation’s greatest believers in the American Dream.

“This Hispanic Heritage Month, as we celebrate our rich heritage and our undeniable history as a nation of immigrants, let us continue to choose hope over hate, to dream of a future without fear, and to continue breaking down barriers instead of building new walls.”

In the coming days, Sen. Menendez will introduce a Senate Resolution recognizing September 15th through October 15th as a month to celebrate and honor the heritage, culture, and many contributions of Hispanic Americans throughout the history of the United States.

On October 13, Sen. Menendez will host his Tenth Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration at the Thomas Jefferson Arts Academy in Elizabeth, N.J. The gathering of hundreds of community members will be an occasion to celebrate the contributions of Latinos and Latinas to New Jersey and the United States. Attendees should RSVP to www.menendez.senate.gov/HHM-2019
