At a Thursday, December 8, event at Queens College Savills, a leading global real estate firm, announced a $25,000 donation to Cambridge University that will enable one Queens College graduate to attend Cambridge University’s Lucy Cavendish College.

The funding will support the graduate in pursuing master’s level study. Queens College President Frank H. Wu (shown above) and Professor Dame Madeleine Atkins, president, Lucy Cavendish College, University of Cambridge, were on hand as representatives of their respective institutions. Atkins accepted the donation on behalf of Cambridge University.

“We are grateful to Savills for its investment in a program that will help support our alumni as they pursue graduate studies at Lucy Cavendish College at the University of Cambridge,” said President Wu. “Our new and developing partnership stays true to Queens College’s values and mission to prepare our students to serve as innovative leaders in a diverse world that they make more equitable and inclusive. We dedicate ourselves to helping them thrive as global citizens by providing a learning community where multiple languages and cultures are part of the everyday social fabric. I’m delighted to know that our graduates will have the opportunity to enact Queens College ideals abroad through this new initiative.”

Background
Both Queens College of the City University of New York and Lucy Cavendish College of the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom are committed to serving underrepresented students from low-income and often marginalized communities. The study abroad program aims to provide such Queens College graduates with opportunities that will help unlock their potential as they pursue a graduate degree, supporting their ambitions for careers with leading firms, not-for-profit organizations, or as entrepreneurs. This aligns with Queens College’s mission to prepare its students—who speak 96 native languages and identify with 133 ancestries—to serve as innovative leaders in a diverse world that they make more equitable and inclusive. Similarly, Lucy Cavendish College seeks to broaden the experience of Queens College graduates by immersing them in its outstanding academic and research programs alongside its diverse student population, which represents more than 80 countries.
