The Schomburg Center is in process of slowly reopening.

The following is a message from the Schomburg Center.

Dear Schomburg Center Friends: We’re slowly and safely getting back to work inside the Schomburg Center as the Library begins a carefully phased-in process of reopening branches to the public. As the situation unfolds, we, and other locations of The New York Public Library are navigating a new work landscape.

In this issue, join us for a virtual dinner-and-a-movie experience. Watch clips of director Raoul Peck’s documentary, I Am Not Your Negro, which is based on the unpublished writings of James Baldwin. The film and talkback give unparalleled insights to the writer and activist whose collection of personal papers are part of the Schomburg Center’s archives.

Afterward, go on a food crawl featuring cuisines from across the Africana Diaspora and learn more about the restaurants that make Harlem the premiere dining capital through our oral history project, A People’s History of Harlem, and our Digital Collections and blog posts.

Join the conversation when NYPL’s Get Lit with All of It book club discusses The Nickel Boys with author Colson Whitehead on Wednesday, July 29 at 7 PM. Plus, on Wednesday, August 5, Isabel Wilkerson talks about her new book, Caste in America: The Origins of Our Discontents.

Finally, view a new online exhibition, Freedom’s Founders, curated by Schomburg Center staff, which highlights some of the leaders and activists who agitated and advocated for the nation to live up to its promise of equality for all.

Enjoy this look at “I Am Not Your Negro,” our virtual dining-out issue, and more of our digital offerings.

Sincerely,

Kevin Young

Director, Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture
