With little written information on the history and effects of slavery in Morocco, Black Morocco: A History of Slavery, Race and Islam bridges that gap.  Author Chouki El Hamel examines the experiences, identity, and achievements of enslaved blacks while also analyzing the extent to which Islamic religion and ideology actually orders a society. Joining El Hamel in conversation is Michael Gomez, Professor of History, Middle Eastern and Islmaic Studies at NYU.

Dr. Chouki El Hamel is a professor at Arizona State University in Tempe. His work focuses primarily on Islamic culture in Africa. Black Morocco: A History of Slavery, Race and Islam is his second major publication in addition to producing several other scholarly articles.

Before 5 is a popular program series of mid-day events featuring writers and artists in a range of programs such as talks, workshops and live performances.

For all free events, we generally overbook to ensure a full house. All registered seats are released 15 to 30 minutes before start time, so we recommend that you arrive early.
