There are a number of reasons that poker has become so popular in so short a time. For example, it is one of the most accessible hobbies that can be found at the time, not least because people who cannot find a game in their local neighborhood can just head online to find all of the games that they could ever want. Furthermore, it it a game of skill, thus providing poker players with a measure of control that contributes much to the excitement of the experience.

Regardless, what matters is that these reasons have provided poker with a broad appeal that cuts across divisions, so it should come as no surprise to learn that there are a number of poker players from the Black community who are making their presence felt at the poker tables at this point in time. One rising example is Denílson, who might be better-known to some as having been a footballer of some note for some time.

Who Is Denílson? There is more than one Brazilian footballer named Denílson, but the one who is making a name for himself in the world of poker is Denílson de Oliveira Araújo. He made his debut with São Paulo FC in his hometown of São Paulo at the age of 17, becoming part of the team that went on to win the 1994 Copa CONMEBOL – the annual tournament of the organization that is responsible for overseeing association football in the entire continent of South America.

From that initial success, he went on to La Liga in Spain, where he played from 1998 to 2005 with the exception of a short intermission of a few months spent on loan to Clube de Regatas do Flamengo in his native Brazil. Afterwards, he signed on with FC Girondins de Bordeaux in France, Al Nassr FC in Saudi Arabia, FC Dallas in the United States, Sociedade Esportiva Palmeiras in Brazil, Bolton Wanderers in England, Itumbiara Esporte Clube in Brazil, Hi Phòng FC in Vietnam, and then AO Kavala in Greece. Denílson also managed a number of impressive accomplishments off the pitch.

New Endeavors: Having retired from football in 2010, Denílson now serves as a sports commentator for Rede Bandeirantes, which is one of the biggest TV networks in Brazil that happens to be based in his hometown of São Paulo. However, what is even more interesting is the fact that he has started playing professional poker, which is something that has been becoming more and more popular in his native Brazil. He started playing professional poker at a big event in Belo Horizonte despite having little experience at the felt. He is been coached by the formidable Bruno Foster, who happens to be his favorite poker player in much the same way that Neymar da Silva Santos Junior happens to be his favorite footballer at the moment.

Combined with his newfound dedication to the game as well as the focus and patience that characterized his career as a professional footballer, it is no coincidence that Denilson has been chosen as 888poker’s first celebrity ambassador in Brazil. Black Representation in Poker: It remains to be seen whether Denílson will be able to live up to his promise as a poker player, but it is clear that he is but one among many Black poker players who have made their presence felt in the world of poker. As they continue to do so, they pave the way for more and more Black poker players to enter the same world, who might have never heard of professional poker without those who came before them or might have never thought about participating in professional poker games on their own. Due to this, it seems probable that the world of poker will continue to become a more and more diverse scene in times to come.
