"An African City tells" the story of five beautiful, successful and determined African females who return to their home continent in search of the life and love they’ve always longed for. The first episode will debut on the show’s YouTube channel on March 2nd: www.youtube.com/anafricancity
Billed as the ‘Sex and the City’ of Africa, the show delves into the lives of these women as they struggle to find new ways to deal with being modern and successful while not falling victim to the pressures put on them by their traditional African parents and society as a whole. Created by Nicole Amarteifio and produced by Millie Monyo the show was shot in Accra, using a multi-talented Ghanaian production crew. The show will give viewers a peek at the amazing landscape that exists in urban Accra – a city dubbed by The New York Times as the 4th best travel destination in the world – as well as showcase the gorgeous fashions by top African designers.
“When I first saw ‘Sex and the City’, I just thought, these women are so authentic in their discussions of self-discovery. Upon returning to Ghana myself, I knew I had to tell this story of self-discovery from the returnee perspective,” says Amarteifio.
Producers wanted to push boundaries and authenticate the experience of coming “home” and trying to find your place. “We chose to launch the show’s first season online so that we could push the boundaries and have the creative freedom to talk about anything – whether silly or serious. Our hope is to create enough of a stir that audiences will be begging to see it on every television across Africa and beyond.”
Starring MaameYaa Boafo, Nana Mensah, Esosa E, Marie Humbert and Maame Adjei, the cast of An African City is true to form, bringing together well known actresses who have lived abroad but with roots in Africa.
