Newark Museum Screening of Queen of Katwe

The Newark Black Film Festival will continue on July 5 with an outdoor screening of Queen of Katwe at the Newark Museum. The screening is free but registration is required. Registration opens on Thursday, June 29 and can be made at The Museum is located at 49 Washington St., Newark, and parking is available on-site for a fee.
The evening begins at 7 pm with activities provided by the Newark Chess Club. The club is a mentorship program that teaches strategic theory and thought through chess. The screening of Queen of Katwe will follow at 8:30 pm.
Living in the slum of Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10-year-old Phiona and her family. Her world changes when she meets Robert Katende, an educator and youth soccer coach who teaches children how to play chess. Her success in local competitions and tournaments opens the door to a bright future and a golden chance to escape from a life of poverty.
The evening will be hosted by Darryl Scipio of the Newark Chess Club and Darryl Scipi.
Since its introduction by the Museum in 1974, NBFF has provided a forum for emerging writers, directors, producers, performers and patrons of Black cinema. For the 17th consecutive year, the Festival is made possible by Bank of America. The official airline is United Airlines.
