Legendary blues singer Ruth Brown, 78, has died. She had been on life support in a Las Vegas hospital, reports Roger Freidman of Fox 411.

“Ruth, whose biggest hit was ‘Mama He Treats Your Daughter Mean,’ has been a pioneer in the music business in many ways. An original performer at the start of Atlantic Records, it was Ruth who got Atlantic to put up an endowment for the foundation to save other artists, states Friedman.

Born Ruth Weston on January 30, 1928, in Portsmouth, VA, Ruth Brown started out singing in church. In 1945, she ran away from home to sing in bars and clubs. In 1948, she was performing in a club in Washington, DC, when the heads of Atlantic Records came to see her.

Ruth produced a series of hit songs for Atlantic Records as their very first star, forever labeling Atlantic Records, ‘The House That Ruth Built’. She was inducted into the R&B Hall of Fame in 1993, and won a long deserved Tony Award on Broadway for her starring role in the hit musical; “BLACK & BLUE.”  Despite her many great records Brown has never won a Grammy.
