Legendary singer and musician Ike Turner has died at the age of 76.

He died yesterday morning in his sleep according to his manager at his San Diego home.

Ike Turner, born in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1931, shot to fame when he moved to St Louis and met a singing teenager who went by the name Annie Mae Bullock, later became Tina Turner.

They scored a hit with the song “A fool in love” in 1959 and from then until 1976 they recorded and toured as Ike & Tina Turner. After a violent altercation in 1976, Tina left Ike Turner.

Ike struggled to find success and after releasing two failed solo albums found him self facing drug and weapons charges throughout the 1980s and 1990s. In 1991 he was inducted into the rock & roll hall of fame and more recently he played piano for Damon Alban’s group Gorrilaz 

In 2001, Ike released the Grammy-nominated Here & Now album. Three years later, he was awarded with a "Heroes Award" from the Memphis charter of NARAS. Last year he played piano for Damon Alban’s video group Gorillaz.

Ike was released from Prison in 1993 and lived a drug free life until his death.
