TMZ.com, the celebrity website is reporting that the argument that led to the beating of Rihanna by her boyfriend Chris Brown started after he received a text message from a female wanting a "hook up."

Rihanna, the superstar performer discovered and nurtured by Jay-Z, suffered "horrific" injuries, according to media reports.

One account reports that she was slapped, punched, bitten and choked unconscious by Brown, 19, who then fled before surrendering later. He was charged with "making criminal threats" and released on $50,000 bail. He could face up to nine years if convicted, it was reported.

The assault is reported to have happened early Sunday morning when he pair was leaving a pre-Grammys event in Los Angeles.

She allegedly threw out of the car the keys to a rented Lamborghini, leading to the beating. The singer’s eyes were "almost completely swollen shut" TMZ reports.

Dispatchers could hear Rihanna’s screams in the background when a 911 call was made, according to media accounts. A crime report was filed under Rihanna’s real name, Robyn Fenty, it was reported.

She was treated at Cedars-Sinai hospital.
