The single is a socially conscious song that touches on many of the contemporary problems that Black America faces including: incarceration, urban violence, homelessness, poverty and police brutality---specifically addressing the killings of Breonna Taylor, Philando Castille and Elijah McClain.

The song also talks about the incarceration of Mumia Abu-Jamal and Julius Jones. The topic of Reparations for Black Americans is raised in "Shelter."
