Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration 2022
In the middle of the pandemic, East Elmhurst, Queens was the epicenter of the epicenter. During this time, like many communities of color, East Elmhurst faced severe food insecurities. As such, great challenges, require great acts of service. The East Elmhurst, First Baptist Church and the One Hundred Black Men of NYC rose to the occasion, by providing healthy food for thousands of families. Even during the height of the pandemic, Rev. Patrick Young, Pastor of East Elmhurst, First Baptist Church, church volunteers and other ‘food pantries’ fed scores of families on a weekly basis while providing a beacon of hope throughout the community.
This mobilization of preachers and community organizations during an unprecedented world-wide pandemic, highlighted the power of volunteering as a form of liberation to ease suffering. Each act of kindness shines a light that illuminates our need to feel pride in ourselves when those in our communities support each other. This feeling of pride in witnessing and participating in various acts of service can birth an idea, as it did with Dina Gardner, founder of Haarlem Threadz. Through observing and participating in supporting the efforts of the One Hundred Black Men of NYC and First Baptist Church; Dina became inspired to bring a Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration to her eclectic, beloved Queens community.
As Dina excitedly stated:
“Jubilee in my community will be a combination of Music, History, and the Spirit.” which will feature 4x
Grammy Nominated and NAACP Award-winning group, The Baylor Project, who will bring a brand-new vibe
for our community- to keep on striving. Also, Former Langston Hughes Cultural Center Director, Andrew
Jackson, will explain the need to celebrate liberation in a post insurrection world. On Sunday, Gospel House
Singer Kenny Bobien will help us dance as we proclaim, I Shall not be moved! This is First Baptist Church’s
First Juneteenth Jubilee…a day of JOY. You have to come out and Jubilee with US!”
Dina’s vision has resulted in an extraordinary feat for someone who is planning an event of this magnitude for the first time. Being inspired can cause one to reach fantastic heights, especially when you add synergy to the mix. The purpose behind Dina’s vision is to remember that as we transition into a ‘new normal’ we must always remember to celebrate and honor those who endeavor to end food insecurity in our communities. The volunteer workers put themselves at personal risk, not for the glory, but for humanity and doing what needed to be done. Volunteer staffers from each food pantry will be honored for “Mobilizing Preachers and Communities” (MPAC) as we celebrate their heartfelt acts of service. Our joy defies our pain, as we celebrate our liberation, our emancipation and, yes, our very survival.
Following March 2020, our communities have been forever changed. As we hold the memories of our loved ones close, may we also celebrate and cherish our lives. This event is sure to be filled with lots of joy for the youth and families of all that attend this Juneteenth Jubilee Celebration, a day of feeling Liberated and Emancipated!
