The Billie Holiday Theatre (BHT) has announced its global call for stories for the third annual presentation of its popular 50in50: Letters to Our Daughters in collaboration with founding partner Frank Silvera Writers’ Workshop (FSWW).

MacArthur “Genius” awardee Dominique Morisseau returns as curator for the piece and her curatorial statement calls women from all walks of life to tell their stories. A diverse group of 50 stories will be selected to be read by a renowned collective of women actors in Brooklyn, New York, followed by the West Coast premiere at the dynamic and newly-created WACO Theater Center in Los Angeles, California.

Readings will take place in March, 2019. In the past, stories have been selected by entrants from around the corner in the Bedford Stuyvesant community to around the world in Holland, South Africa, and Canada. This year’s program will focus on vital issues affecting women and girls today and, in fact, the readings will include a community conversation exploring global movements like #MeToo and #MuteRKelly and how these issues are dealt with and discussed within the Black community.

Dominique Morisseau asks: “As women writers, I want you to consider the world you inherited and the one you’d like to create. Consider the many lessons that you’ve learned and the ones you wish you’d learned. What will you leave behind for the daughters of tomorrow?”

“The Billie and FSWW came together to create 50in50 as a platform for agency and empowerment so that any woman or girl can share her story, regardless of class, race, age, ability, gender identity, nationality, and sexual orientation,” said Dr. Indira Etwaroo, Executive Director, BHT. “It is not lost on us that 50in50 has become increasingly meaningful over the last two years of its existence, as women continue to grapple with historical injustices and social norms that would oppress, rather than liberate. We are deeply honored to bring this necessary platform to our audiences in Brooklyn and to expand our programmatic footprint to the WACO Theatre Center in LA.”

General Information: Submission Deadline is Friday, February 8 at 11:59PM. Selected Writers will be Announced: February 12, 2019.
