Commentary: Ethiopia And The Battle Of Tigray

1

The Battle for Tigray between Prime Minister Abiy's federal government forces and the TPLF in Tigray at face value appears like an attempt to prevent secession. But there is much back history that helps inform a better understanding of the crisis.

I cover the history of Ethiopia dating to the feudal era in this video commentary. Ethiopia, like every African country is also facing challenges of the economic fallout as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. As revenue from exports and tourism receipts collapsed there is more pressure to continue serving the external debt--Africa's total external debt is more than $400 billion, and debt cancellation must be the imperative.

Milton, are you denying or finding it insignificant that the TPLF attacked a federal army base in Mekelle on November 3 before Abiy sent the Ethiopian army into Tigray in response? How many sovereign heads of state would not respond to an attack on the national army?
