HOW TO COVER (OR NOT COVER) AFRICA PANEL AT COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY

Eric Chinje (then of Mo Ibrahim Foundation), Milton Allimadi (The Black Star News) and Andrew Rice (Economist/NY Times)

Published on May 10, 2012: In the wake of the Kony 2102 debacle and the debates it generated, the Columbia Chapter of Society of Professional Journalists organized a panel discussion to talk about how Africa is covered in American mainstream media.

A lot has been said about Africa’s image and how to mainstream media portrays events on the continent. The panelists Andrew Rice of NYT, Eric Chinje of Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Milton Allimadi of Black Star News discuss how to (and not to) cover Africa focusing on the other sides of Africa, beyond the wars, famine and diseases. The discussion was moderated by Professor Ann Cooper.
