Rep. Engel: I strongly condemn today’s arrest and subsequently release of Ugandan member of parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Mr. Kyagulanyi has announced his intention to challenge President Museveni in the country’s elections next year, and this unwarranted arrest is clear intimidation by the incumbent.”

Monday, New York Congressman Engel, the Chairman on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, condemned the most recent detention Ugandan parliament member Bobi Wine, who has been the target of constant attacks by the government of President Yoweri Museveni ever since he first ran for political office in 2017.

“I strongly condemn today’s arrest and subsequently release of Ugandan member of parliament Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine. Mr. Kyagulanyi has announced his intention to challenge President Museveni in the country’s elections next year, and this unwarranted arrest is clear intimidation by the incumbent.

“For several years, the repeated harassment and detention of members of the opposition by the Government of Uganda has had a chilling effect on the climate for free and fair elections. Anyone running for office deserves a safe and honest space to campaign, and the people of Uganda deserve the right to choose their political leadership.”

Wine, who first came to prominence as a star musician singing a fusion of Afrobeat, Reggae and Dancehall, has been repeatedly faced harassment, detention–and has been the victim of torture. On August 13, 2018, in an apparent attempt on his life his driver, Yasin Kawuma, was shot dead following a political rally. By August 15, Wine was arrested supposedly for possible charges of unlawful possession of weapons and incitement of violence. The charges were withdrawn due to massive protest pressure by Ugandans.

Since then, Bobi Wine has been repeatedly detained, especially, since his announcement that he will be running to replace President Museveni in the 2021 Election.
