A change.org petition urging Uganda’s Parliament not to allow dictator Yoweri K. Museveni to remove the age-75 limit from the constitution so that he can run again in just over three years time is gaining steam with 3,700 signatures already.

Some Members of Parliament (MP) who seem not to care about the national interest, have passed a motion in support of the measure the dictator, who seized power in 1986, wants.

The dictator is officially 73 years old, which would make him 77 by the time of the next election in 2021. He is believed to be as old as 75 already.

Ugandan and international election observers concluded the 2016 vote wasn’t free, fair or credible. It’s widely believed Gen. Museveni stole the election from opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye.

Gen. Museveni pressured Parliament and also bribed MPs with $5,000 to remove term-limits, the first obstacle to his life-presidency scheme in 2005, which allowed him to run again. In a television interview, before he rigged the 2016 election, Gen. Museveni said he wouldn’t support the lifting of age limits from the constitution.

“Not at all,” the dictator told the interviewer, when asked whether he would seek to run past the age of 75, “Certainly not.”

Ugandans accustomed to Gen. Museveni’s lies over the last 31 years knew that meant he would remove age limits.

A wide cross-section of Ugandans and scores of MPs have denounced and rejected the dictator’s life-presidency scheme. A popular young MP, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, also known by his musical stage name Bobi Wine, has issued a statement repudiating the motion by his parliamentary colleagues. The statement, which referred to MPs backing the measure as “dishonorable and unpatriotic” gone viral.

Ssentamu said the MPs had placed their names on a “national wall of shame.”

The new petition opposing the Museveni life-presidency scheme, whose support is rapidly increasing, was launched by Washington, D.C.-based Ugandan pharmacist Dr. Daniel Kawuma.

Addressed to the Speaker of Parliament and its members not to alter Article 102(b) of the Ugandan Constitution which “stipulates that a person is qualified for election as President if that person is not less than 35 years and not more than 75 years of age.”

“This amendment would be a significant step backwards in the democratization of Uganda and makes a mockery of our political process,” the petition states.

“With over 70% of Ugandans opposed to amending the constitutional age limit, the members of parliament are legislating against the wishes of the people. In addition to that, cash payments to legislators that precede constitutional amendments confirm transactional politics at the expense of rule of law,” the petition adds.

The petition warns: “The Uganda constitution has been written and rewritten in 1962, 1966, 1967 and 1995 in addition to numerous amendments that have been aimed at consolidating power. When our own lawmakers don’t value the laws of the land, the consequence within the populace is discontent, uncertainty and political instability.”

The petition urges: “Make legislative decisions in the interest of the Ugandan people rather than extending political careers. Change the culture of political party centered coercive consultations and legislative maneuvers in amending the constitution.”

The petition concludes: “Say NO to amending Article 102(b) of the Uganda Constitution.”

As of 2PM on September 16 there were 3,778 signatories.
