(Chad’s President Idris Debby)
The Committee to Protect Journalists today condemned the sweeping media restrictions after the Chadian government’s declaration of a state of emergency.
“Turning the entire private media into a scapegoat for ethnic violence is outrageous,” said CPJ’s Africa Program Coordinator Julia Crawford. “Government censorship of the private press and muzzling sensitive radio coverage will only deprive the population of vital information about the unrest in the east and other urgent matters of public interest. We call on the government to remove these restrictions immediately.”
