Uganda Land Grab is Despicable

Thousands are being evicted once again and who benefits? The people of Amuru living on the “customary land” have not been compensated, nor are they guaranteed a percentage of the profits from Madhvani.

This land grab by the Madhvani Group and the NRM in Uganda’s Acholi region is despicable.

After having been forcefully displaced by the NRM during the war with the LRA and held in such wretched conditions that more died from the conditions in the camps than from the LRA, one really has to regard this new deal in Amuru with the greatest suspicion.

Thousands are being evicted once again and who benefits? The people of Amuru living on the “customary land” have not been compensated, nor are they guaranteed a percentage of the profits from Madhvani. The likelihood that there is oil or other minerals beneath the soil is great, but certain leaders in cahoots with the NRM government have signed away the people’s rights to that as well.

Deals like this have been done in Central and South America as well. The people have lost control of their land and resources through unscrupulous deals between shady government officials and so-called investors. They now live in poverty as the rich few become even richer.
