Three years from London’s Olympics, athletes from allover the world are busy trying to improve their times in order to qualify for the various contests.
This week, in Uganda, two top female athletes inched towards their targets of 2 minutes in the 800 meters race—that’s the time they’ll need to score to make it to London in 2012.
The contest was won by Juliet Chekwell (who attends Standard SSS) at 2:08:4 followed closely by Achola Janet (who attends Kampala International University) who scored a personal best of 2:09:9. “I am confident that we are on course for 2 min 6 sec this season and then around 2 min 00 sec in 2012, so she can qualify for the London Olympics,” said Achola’s coach, Kevin O’Connor.
The meet was at the Uganda Athletic Federation’s Second National Trial at Mandela National Stadium, Kampala.
