Brooklyn Borough President, Marty Markowitz awarded 27-year-old award winning actor, Kevin Byrd with a citation for his work as an advocate for prostate cancer awareness.  The Brooklyn Borough President presented the citation on behalf of over two million residents residing in the borough of Brooklyn. 


Byrd's  prostate cancer awareness campaign has garnered him international media status in over seventeen countries.  In September, 2007, Byrd made his first international headlines in 17 countries, being featured in The Epoch International Times (the largest independent international newspaper reaching over 1.5 million people weekly worldwide in countries like United Kingdom, Canada, United States, Japan, China, Indonesia and Spain) for his prostate cancer awareness campaign.


African American men have about a 60 percent higher incidence rate of prostate cancer than white men, and about a 2-fold higher mortality rate than white men.


About Kevin Byrd

Kevin Byrd is a 27-year old award-winning actor. He enjoyed a banner year for his one-man off-Broadway show entitled, "Release."  Release is a show that highlights the emotions and struggles that men encounter on different angles, revealing a deep sense of self exploration.  Release is Byrd’s first off-Broadway theatre production and ran at the Players Theatre in Manhattan to a sold out audience.  The play was hosted by BET  Comic View comedian, Ardie Fuqua and backed up by a six-piece live band. Release was written by Kevin Byrd and produced, and directed (along with Jason Hendricks and Marc Meir and Chris Frierson).    


Byrd started his acting career as the Legendary solider Lt. John R. Fox, a Congressional Gold Medal Honoree recipient and the Hasbro G.I. Joe Action Hero figurine.  Fox is famous and known for risking his own life in WWII and being awarded the highest military award (Congressional Gold Medal of Honor) from President Bill Clinton in 1997. 


In March 2007, Byrd received the NAMIC Vision Award nomination for Best T.V Documentary for the History Channel’s "Honor Deffered," produced by Al Roker Productions and hosted by Bernie Mac and Samuel L. Jackson.  Byrd also starred in a Nike Commercial entitled, "The Calling," directed by Alonzo Johnson, due for release this year.  Byrd has been on the front cover of three publications including AMAG, The Black Star News (front Cover Breaking News Headlines), and he is the first and youngest African American male actor to ever grace the cover of Parle Magazine.  Byrd has also appeared in The New York Trend and Broowha National Newspaper for his work with prostate cancer awareness and autism for children and adults.


On October 1st, 2007, Byrd and his hometown of Utica, New York, celebrated Kevin Byrd Day, making him the first and youngest African American male entertainer to receive a proclamation ward and his own Personal Day in History.


In December 2007, Kevin Byrd in ended the year by filming a new International Bollywood featured movie called "Kiran Meets Karen" and stars as a news journalist.  The film is directed by accredited South Asian filmmaker/producer.  The film is due for international release in theatres this summer.


Recently, Kevin Byrd spoke and performed at the Eagle Academy in the Bronx, New York .  In addition, he has appeared on the Gerald Deas Show concerning Prostate Cancer Awareness and his advocacy for early screening and detection of Prostate Cancer.  Kevin Byrd has been instrumental in bringing global attention to prostate cancer through his work and raising awareness to the benefits of early detection and screening.
