Economy: New York’s Unemployment Drops To 5.1% From 5.2% Over One-Year Period

Sharp drop in New York City’s unemployment

New York State’s unemployment dropped to 5.1% from 5.2% over the past twelve months with New York City seeing improvement to 4.8% from 6.5% last year, New York State Department of Labor said in a report today.

Rates are calculated as prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s unemployment rate relies in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.

The State’s private sector job count increased by 135,100 from September 2014 to September 2015. In September 2015, the number of private sector jobs in the State was 7,821,700. The State’s private sector job count is based on a payroll survey of 18,000 New York State employers conducted by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Between August and September 2015, the State’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate decreased from 5.2% to 5.1%, its lowest level since April 2008.
