Why App Store Stats Are a Bit Skewed

-A +A

Taking a look at the revenue statistics of the App Store will reveal one very important thing about the American public: it loves games. The top grossing apps in the App Store are the "usual suspects" - MOBAs, King's puzzles, and social casinos. People usually look at these stats from the US, where the iPhone has a market leading position. In other countries, in turn, the list looks a bit different: DoubleDown, Slotomania, and all the other social casinos never even make it close to the top 10. The reason for this difference is the legality of online gambling.

When it comes to service quality, and game variety, neither of the top social casinos (constantly among the top 10 grossing games in the US) can compete with real money operators. While these don't have a history as long as other casual game type, their development was way faster, resulting in both a superior quality, and variety. Take the All Slots Casino for example.

The All Slots Casino was launched in 2003, using the software provided by one of the veteran game developers in the industry. Since then, the number of games in its library has constantly grown, reaching over 700 titles today. And it has expanded to mobile devices as well, giving social casinos a hard time in the jurisdictions where it is allowed to operate - today the All Slots Casino offers its users a library of over 100 mobile games to play with. And before you argue that it is a real money operator: it offers its players a completely free game mode, with no restrictions whatsoever.  And this is most likely one of the reasons why social casinos are not such huge hits in Europe.

According to ThinkGaming, the top grossing iPhone game of the world on the 1st of June 2016 was Game of War - Fire Age, followed closely by Epic War's Mobile Strike. The third place is occupied by a Japanese title called "Puzzle & Dragons", surpassing SuperCell's Clash of Clans. The fifth place on the chart is occupied by another Japanese game, with a title that translates to Monster Strike, followed by another Supercell title, Clash Royale (or, by its Chinese title, Tribal Conflict: Imperial War), and Aniplex's Fate/Grand Order. The last three in the top 10 grossing iPhone apps on the list are another Chinese game (called "Fantasy Westward Journey - Liu poetry with your dreams by playing westbound everyone", according to Google Translate), Candy Crush Saga, and Summoners War.

The first social casino to make it on the list is Playtika's Slotomania, on the 20th place.
