The United States Marine Corps Honors Leadership at the 2007 CIAA Conference
The United States Marine Corps (USMC) honored the proud legacy of Historically Black Colleges and Universities by saluting their student athletes at the 62 nd Annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Tournament, taking place in Charlotte, North Carolina from February 26 through March 3, 2007.  This year's tournament marks the Marine Corps' sixth year as a leading partner for the nation's oldest African American athletic conference.
"Our involvement in the CIAA tournament provides us with an opportunity to recognize and celebrate young people who display leadership qualities through their commitment to hard work in school, as well as in their extracurricular activities," said Brigadier General Ronald L. Bailey, Deputy Director for Operations, J-3 (NMCC-3), Joint Staff.
The Marine Corps recognized student athletes for their display of excellence through teamwork, discipline, courage and leadership.  Beginning Thursday, March 1, the Marine Corps honored the most valuable players from each CIAA tournament game by presenting on-court Excellence in Leadership awards.  The award recognizes leadership traits that help Marines earn the respect, confidence and loyal cooperation of other Marines.
The United States Marine Corps also participated in several CIAA activities during the tournament week.  It gave students the opportunity to test their strength, endurance and discipline by conducting its annual "Chin-up Challenge" during the Ford Fan Experience.  The Marine Corps also joined forces with the US Navy to kick off the Men's Championship Game, with a flag ceremony in recognition of the men and women serving in the United States Armed Forces.
"We honor the hard work and commitment exhibited by the African American men and women representing their schools at this year's CIAA tournament," said Lt. General Ronald S. Coleman, Deputy Commandant for Manpower and Reserve Affairs. "This event consistently shares the proud heritage of leadership, which is at the center of the Marine Corps' tradition of excellence."
